Brothers

it's been fun watching aj and miles form a friendship over the past couple months. one minute they will be playing like bff's and the next they are fighting like maniacs...but overall there is nothing but love. i'm so glad they have each other as buddies for the rest of their lives.

here they are playing some silly game together:

New family tradition

For Christmas, Alex and I got bikes and a bike seat for Miles which we scored for a sweet deal on craigslist. It has been so fun to bike around our neighborhood as a family after dinner. AJ loves to race us and entertain Miles with his fancy bike tricks. I am really enjoying our new family tradition!

In other news, my favorite tree just started budding. I never used to get excited about trees and gardening until we bought our house 4 years ago which came with a dirt/rock/clay backyard. The one request that I had when we were planning our landscape was that I wanted a deciduous tree with fall-colored leaves. Fall is my absolute favorite time of the year and I wanted to be able to 'see' fall in our mild Cali climate. So for my birthday the first year we were here, Alex's parents bought me a Liquidamber with the most beautiful orange-red leaves. I LOVE this tree in the summer and fall but in the winter and early spring, I kinda forget it is there. Well, I just noticed today that it's finally coming out of dormancy and beginning to show life. Woohoo!

community

i grew up in what i would consider one of the best neighborhoods around. my best friend lived a couple streets over, our house was at the end of the cul-de-sac, there were kids everywhere, we would play outside almost every afternoon until the street lights came on, we could ride our bikes to the community pool or to thrifty's for a $0.45 cone without parental supervision, we gathered frequently, and all new each other. i have so many fond memories of amberwick lane and feel incredibly blessed to have grown up in such a loving community.

fast forward to 5 years ago when alex and i were pregnant with aj and house hunting for the first time. it was an exciting time but extremely overwhelming for me. i have a hard time purchasing a pair of shoes let alone a house. i prayed hard for our first house- the location, size, style, year it was built, etc. we looked all over north county san diego for the perfect house and it just overwhelmed me. there were houses here and there that i liked but i never felt at peace or had that aha moment until i began praying for one thing- community. i reflected on my childhood home and what was most important for me as a kid and also what would be important for me as a mom and wife. i began praying that wherever we moved, god would provide me with a christian neighbor. i prayed that our children would have great friends to play with and that we would live on a safe street to play on (specifically a cul-de-sac). i began to care less and less about the size and city and more about the community of people.

it has been 4 and a half years since we have lived in our first home, in a cul-de-sac, and i couldn't be more happy. about a month after we bought the house we found out that a couple in our growth group at church lived on our street and has since become great great friends of ours. we jog together, do bible study together, encourage each other, help each other, break bread together, and our kids love each other.

god has been so faithful to provide the friendships and fellowship in our neighborhood that i prayed for. my hope is that this becomes a community that truly knows and cares for one another. i desire to serve and love my neighbors as god has called me to and to step out of my comfort zone to share the love of jesus with them.

james 2:8 says, "if you really keep the royal law found in scripture, 'love your neighbor as yourself,' you are doing right."

there are many days when i neglect to say hi to a neighbor or help when i should or cut short a conversation or fail to really get to know someone because i am so self-focused. i am trying to reach out more and discover what loving your neighbor as yourself really means because i know it will only draw me closer to god and in turn, my neighbors will see god in me.

beth moore wrote in her james study, "our devotion to god and true religion is illustrated most poignantly on the pages of other lives."

rainy day love

Let my teaching fall like rain
and my words descend like dew,
like showers on new grass,
like abundant rain on tender plants.
I will proclaim the name of the Lord.
Oh, praise the greatness of our God!
He is the Rock, his works are perfect,
and all his ways are just.
A faithful God who does no wrong,
upright and just is he.
(Deuteronomy 32:2-4 NIV)

scenery, scooters, and soup

i love how clean and crisp everything is after a night of rain. this is the view from where i pick up our csa box of goodies twice a month. gorge.

almost every weekday evening before dinner the scooter gang gathers in our cul-de-sac. this allows us tired mamas to sit and chat while the kids entertain themselves for a while and get all their energy out. god has blessed us with such a fun community and I am so grateful to have close girlfriends a stones throw away. btw- i highly recommend the kickboard scooters for any of you in the scooter market. best.scooters.ever. www.kickboardusa.com

i have been craving a good, hearty, homemade soup and since i have a box full of organic veggies, I decided to make minestrone. I found this recipe on www.food52.com and it was deliiiiish. here's the link: http://food52.com/recipes/4661_smoky_minestrone_with_tortellini_and_parsley_or_basil_pesto. try it, i think you'll like it!

bunk bed

the boys have been sharing a bed for the past month which has caused lots of drama when putting them down at night. miles isn't nearly as tired as aj since he still naps so lots of poking and kicking ensues to try to keep aj awake. we decided it was time to transition them into bunk beds and of course, they were thrilled! here's to hoping their first night is a success.

giving this blog thing another whirl

i have a love hate relationship with blogging. i love looking at and reading blogs but i dislike updating my own blog. i have never enjoyed writing and probably never will but i do have lots of memories captured on photo and little snippets that i think you guys would enjoy. and because i am so bad at recording 'life' as it is, i hope this will be a fun family journal to look back on.

please stop by and say hi often. i can guarantee that you will see lots of pics of my adorable kiddos and not so much of the insightful, life-changing goodies that i cherish on many of your blogs.
